About The Company
Windham Millwork, Inc is an architectural woodworking company that has been a leader in New England since 1957. Custom cabinetry, countertops, mouldings, frames, paneling, reception desks and any and all millwork is what we produce on a consistent basis. We provide our beautiful custom millwork in hospitals, schools, banks, retail, corporate offices, casinos, universities, airports, ski resorts, yachts, commercial and high end residential.
Windham Millwork’s reputation for outstanding workmanship has allowed us the opportunity to play key roles in many important construction projects and renovations, including Maine’s Alfond Center for Health—a 640,000 square foot project that took three years to complete.
We take great pride in being able to provide hospitals with structures and detailing that add modern, refined touches throughout each wing. Not only do we provide original designs and architectural solutions, but we also offer our HealthSafe Systems antimicrobial treatment, which minimizes the effect of germs and protects against harmful microbes on cabinets, countertops, and other high touch surfaces. As with all of our projects, we take the utmost care to ensure that each aspect of our work upholds the highest industry standards and meet all of our client’s needs.
Our custom store fixtures are built to meet the specific requirements of each store we work with. Whether a store requires extra shelving for sale items, customized shelving for irregularly shaped items, or additional storage for bulk items, we can work to create one-of-a-kind solutions that are guaranteed to make an impression. We can also manufacture specialty pieces out of wood, metal, and laminates for ornamental decoration and custom work. Our large inventory of materials, finishes, stains, and designs, coupled with the expertise of our craftsmen, guarantee quality results—every time.
Our work can be found in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, New Jersey and Maryland. We have the capacity in our 65,000 square foot facility to take on any project big or small. We are known throughout the construction industry of having great quality and reliability.
We are a proud member of the Architectural Woodworking Institute (AWI) where we have completed the Quality Certification Program (QCP). We take pride in our craft and look forward to providing you with industry leading woodwork from the finest craftsmen Maine has to offer.
Windham Millwork, Inc is not only apart of the commercial and residential side of millwork projects but we also have a marine division called Maine Mystique. Maine Mystique provides custom yacht interiors and marine products throughout the country. Anything from cabinetry, paneling, trim, tables, dock boxes, dock steps, tackle centers and galley ware. All products are made out of wood or starboard.
Our Story
Windham Millwork was established on the grounds of its current facility in 1957 by Walter Pulkkinen, whose background included working in a large moulding facility in Portland, Maine as well as training and learning the “orders of architecture” with the well known firm of Wadsworth Boston. He established the values that the company continues to strive for today. Those values are the heart and sole of Windham Millwork and led to this promise to it’s customers…”We will achieve 100% customer satisfaction for every product we sell. We will be relentless in the pursuit of that goal and will never vary from the principles of customer satisfaction…quality, value, and company image.”
Walter Pulkkinen surrounded himself with quality people like Everett McKenny, his plant manager for the first 19 years, and Walter Johnson, his head designer. During the 1960’s the company employed approximately 20 people and operated out of about 15,000 square feet of space. As the business grew, Walter saw the need for additional production space and added approximately 12,000 square feet in 1968.
In the late 1970’s Walter began to plan for retirement and, in 1980, he sold the company to his son Bruce and long time employee, Walter Johnson. The company began an expansion plan and grew from revenues of $700,000 in 1980 to $4.2 million in sales by 1987 adding another 20 skilled folks along the way. Another 12,000 square feet were added to the plant to handle the growing custom moulding business.
As the business continued to grow and move to the lean, highly automated and computerized facility it has today, another major expansion occurred. Another large addition to the main plant was done in 1988. Shortly thereafter, the purchase of two adjoining properties incorporate a laminating facility as well as a large warehouse to allow for projects to be pre-built so that Windham can deliver at a moment’s notice when the project site is ready. That has proven to be a huge strength for the company when it tackles large and complex projects and is a key to their satisfied customer base.
The facilities are only a part of the story; the key to your successful partnership with Windham is the quality and skill level of the people who have made their career in the company. Even in difficult times, Windham does not miss an opportunity to add talented folks when opportunities arise. The employees are the key to your satisfaction and Windham has the best out there.
Windham Millwork, Inc was one of the first Architectural Woodwork Institute (AWI) members to achieve Premium Grade Certification for all the products and services they provide and they remain Premium Certified in all AWI disciplines. Key partner/managers and craftsmen have an average industry experience of over 20 years and they provide the high quality products and services that even the most discerning client might expect from their woodwork provider.
Windham Millwork, Inc can help you achieve LEED status on your next project. In addition they have added 3D Inventor Auto-Cad drawing and automation to their design department. This allows them to show your owner what they will get in 3D clarity as well as allowing the geometry of the product to be efficiently cut in the plant, insuring accuracy and reducing time and cost. It also allows you to incorporate the 3D furniture into your 3D BIM model, eliminating conflicts between the woodwork and the other trades.
In recent years the company has begun the transition to the third generation along with adding key managers into ownership positions. Today, in addition to Bruce’s leadership as CEO, other key owners and long term managers are:
Roger Varney – Executive Vice President of Manufacturing
Scott Gordan – Chief Operating Officer
Tim Nunn – Vice President of Sales and Estimating
Ron Kuusela – Vice President of Project Management
Mike McNally – Chief Financial Officer
In today’s tough business world and the difficulties associated with succession planning, Windham Millwork, Inc is proud to have it’s third generation solidly in place with Bruce’s sons, BJ and Chad Pulkkinen, working alongside their father as partners and owners.
With Windham Millwork, Inc you will have the plant, the people, the 3D Auto-Cad Inventor technology to work within your BIM modeling format, the certifications required by owners and the GSA, and the guarantee of receiving the best value for your architectural woodwork dollar.
